RLC Weekly: Advancing the Mission of the Investing in America Agenda

September 25, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

As House Republicans continue to freeze the House in their dysfunction and potentially cause a harmful shutdown, members of the Regional Leadership Council (RLC) and House Democrats continued their work to identify funding opportunities within Investing in America agenda. Here are some of the highlights:

Advancing Climate Priorities

During a House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure hearing, RLC Leader Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) spoke with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to discuss the progress of building electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and the growing demand for EV vehicles. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, House Democrats and President Biden are leading America towards a more equitable, clean energy future. The RLC remains committed to ensuring each and every community in America is a part of that future.

The Damage of a Republican Shutdown

'The last thing we need is for extreme MAGA Republicans to force a government shutdown that would threaten America's progress."

As House Republicans continue to propose extreme cuts and threaten a government shutdown, one thing is clear: Their policy proposals damage real people and threaten the economic recovery America has seen these last three years. RLC Leader Rep. Darren Soto (FL-09) wrote an op-ed for the Orlando Sentinel highlighting the transportation projects, tech job programs, and disaster relief that could be affected should House Republicans willfully shutdown the U.S. government. More on Rep. Soto's work to combat extreme cuts can be found here.

Continuing to Share the Good News

Members of the RLC continue to spread the word on how the Investing in America agenda is lowering prescription drug costs in their communities. RLC Leader Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) recently told Punchbowl News about how frequently she hears from Delawareans about the positive impacts they are experiencing from capped insulin prices. RLC Leader Rep. Derek Kilmer (WA-06) also shared the impact of allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs, empowering those in need to afford life-saving medications. More from Rep. Kilmer here.

What's Next?
  • The White House released this fact sheet on the real-world impact of House Republicans’ extreme Continuing Resolution (CR) proposal. The CR proposal specifically proposes a 60% cut to the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps families afford the cost of heating their homes during colder winter months.
  • Bipartisan Safer Communities Act progress: The Center for American Progress recently shared an update on how this gun safety legislation has helped states like Michigan, Maryland, and Minnesota institute red flag laws. The full report here.
